It is designed to equip ordinary Episcopalians to minister more effectively in the church and the world. It is not intended to be a path to ordained ministry. The curriculum covers: Year 1: Old Testament Year 2: New Testament Year 3: Church History Year 4: Theology EFM follows the principles of adult education. So, there are neither lectures nor tests. Rather, participants spend 2-4 hours a week in individual study, then share their insights and questions with other participants. A typical class starts with a prayer. During the first hour, participants from each year meet in small groups to discuss the textbook readings. During the second hour, the entire class meets for a common lesson—during which participants share their faith stories, engage in theological reflections, explore spiritual disciplines, and discern their personal ministries. The evening ends with a brief worship service (such as Compline) led by one of the participants. The class usually takes two field trips each year to learn first-hand about other faith traditions. In past years participants have visited a local synagogue, Greek Orthodox church, mosque, Buddhist temple, Hindu temple, and Franciscan monastery. At St. Georges, a new EFM class starts each September and ends the following May. The class currently meets every Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. (but the meeting time is decided each year by participants). For more information, contact St. Georges EFM mentor, Terrence Doyle       ");

Marthas Closet would also like hooded sweatshirts for children of all ages, as these are very popular items for the clothing distribution. All socks and underwear should be new, and sweatshirts can be new or used. If you are able to bring in any of these items, please place them in the basket by the alter in the Sanctuary. Social Action We will follow Jesus example of helping all members of society to live with personal pride and dignity, deliberately and purposefully identifying areas where we want to make an impact in our communities, developing plans to carry out our intentions, and measuring the outcome. The structure of this committee reflects the design of the pastoral care program of the parish, which is intended to respond to the needs of individuals and/or families in the parish without making assumptions about what those needs might be. We believe that the spiritual dimension of our lives must be nurtured in order for us to achieve the wholeness that is Gods desire for us. We also struggle openly with the difficult issues of our day. We place a high value on human reason and experience and the ability of God to speak to us through them in community. There are a variety of opportunities at St. Georges for both children and adults to freely explore Christian faith and practice in both large and small group settings. Sunday School for All Ages Classes are held from 9:00 am to 9:50 am each Sunday, mid-September through mid-June. Childcare is also available in the nursery from 9:00 am to 11:30 am each Sunday, where children are supervised by our paid attendant. Children In our Sunday School program for children, we seek to create a loving, nurturing environment which encourages the natural relationship they have with God, allows them to be creative using the gifts God has given them, and teaches them to look for and expect gods activity in their lives. We want St. Georges to be a place where children know they are loved unconditionally! The curriculum for children through grade four is called Godly Play. It is Montessori-based, emphasizing childrens engagement with the major stories of the Bible and aspects of our life together as a Church, such as the sacraments. Children learn and create each Sunday. Once a month, usually the last Sunday of the month, children and adults join together in an Intergenerational Sunday, which usually focuses on some aspect of the Church Year. Children are also invited most Sundays   ");

In addition, our celebration of Holy Week and Easter each year is an especially important time of renewal for our community. This includes the three day celebration of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and the Great Vigil of Easter, called the Paschal Triduum. Worship at St. Georges Worship at St. Georges is a blend of the ancient and the contemporary, the traditional and the new. You might say that we follow the gospel principle of Matthew 13:52... And Jesus said to them, Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. We worship in a particular tradition, that of the Episcopal Church, what is also known as the Anglican tradition. This tradition is itself a mixed one, both catholic and reformed, and one that places a high value on the tension between common forms and local expression. Two words in regards to our worship are very important: liturgy and sacrament. Liturgy is a word derived from two New Testament Greek words: laos, meaning people, and ergon, meaning work. It literally means a public work, or, the work of the people. Liturgy is a word we use for our worship because we understand it to be fundamentally a work of the people. One of the things this means is that we place a very high value on participation. We do have clergy and others with designated roles in our worship, but worship--liturgy--is something the gathered community does together.   ");

We are committed to working toward the fulfillment of the familiar petition of the Lords Prayer, that Gods will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Action in the world on behalf of God takes many forms: cooperative support of community programs with other churches, raising up community volunteer opportunities, looking for ways we as a community of faith can positively impact our community, or using our building for the good of those around us. Organizational Participation Marthas Closet St. Georges helped found this interfaith food pantry and childrens clothing distribution center in 1980 along with several other area churches. In 1985 the facility moved to a site on the Chapel grounds, where it remained until 1999. It is now located at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 5601 Randolph Road, Cheverly. There are currently 16 member churches. St. Georges has a seat on the Board of Directors, makes a monthly financial contribution, supplies food for the pantry, a space for Board meetings, and provides Tuesday morning volunteers two months each year. In the past the Episcopal Diocesan Hunger Fund has also supplied money for the purchase of food. Current St. Georges representative to the Board of Directors is Marsha Bray. Collington Episcopal Lifecare Community St. Georges was one of several local Episcopal congregations that founded this full-service assisted living facility in Mitchellville in 1988. Currently the facility is expanding. St. Georges has an official representative on the Board of Collington and the Rector is one of it  ");
